One of the best rainy day activities to do with kids and teens, in my opinion, is an indoor scavenger hunt. They are able to run off some of their pent up energy while looking for creative clues and parents are able to have a break from their following footsteps and constant questions. It will keep the kids involved, engaged and hopefully not picking on one another!
Indoor scavenger hunts can be as elaborate as you want to make them. For the harried grandparent looking for something quick to put together, simply make a list of objects around the house that they need to find. Make it as long as you want. If the house is getting out of control and you want some help picking it up, consider using that idea as you make your clues. For example: pick all the toys up off the floor in your bedroom, or empty the dishwasher, or wipe up the sink in the bathroom. You'll be able to get away with this if you intersperse in some fun clues like look in the dryer (and hide a piece of candy there), or draw a funny picture of your dad, etc.
If you are looking to be more elaborate, you can hide the objects that you will have them look for throughout the house ahead of time. This is especially good for the teens and even better if the objects are small or hard to find. Consider making it a purple scavenger hunt where all the items are purple.
Another rainy day option is to do an online scavenger hunt. You can prepare one yourself ahead of time and make it a learning experience for the kids on any topic you choose, or you can find some online that are pre-made and ready to go. Consider adding at least one or two internet scavenger hunt clues to your indoor hunt and you are on the way to making it really fun and engaging!
Always remember the attention span of the age level you are making the scavenger hunt for because you want it to be fun for them the entire time. Otherwise, they'll be back to following you around and this time they might be whining about the hunt! So make it as fun and enjoyable for them as you can and you will have an enjoyable break from the chaos.
Indoor scavenger hunt ideas can be used to supplement this guide as you make your scavenger hunt and beat the rainy day blues.
